On 12 February 1995, the "Interessengemeinschaft Thüringer Heimatschutz" intended to hold a demonstration with up to 250 participants in Jena's city centre. It was planned to run along the Altstadtring from Johannisplatz via Lutherplatz to Holzmarkt (photo). The motto: "Preserving Thuringian identity against internationalization through the European Community." Beate Zschäpe had submitted the registration to the public order office on 2 February 1995. The city rejected the application on the grounds that it coincided with an application from 1994 marking the anniversary of the "Reichskristallnacht" (Night of Broken Glass). Fourteen days earlier, Tino Brandt had been given the cover name "Otto" by the Thuringian Office for the Protection of the Constitution. To this day, Holzmarkt remains a site of rallies and demonstrations.
