On 9 September 2000, the Hessian flower wholesaler Enver Şimşek was covering for a colleague who was on vacation and who normally ran the stand on Liegnitzer Straße in Nuremberg. In the afternoon, police found the severely injured flower vendor in his delivery van. Eight bullets were lodged in his body. The 38-year-old, who had lived in Hesse since he was 24, died two days later at the nearby Klinikum Süd. He left behind a fourteen-year-old daughter and a thirteen-year-old son. Both children had been born in Germany. The fact that the flower stand was located on the former NSDAP Reich Party Rally Grounds, in the immediate vicinity of a former SS camp, played no role in the police investigation. Instead, the murder victim's wife was suspected of having ordered the murder. Investigators subsequently pursued, for years and without success, the theory of "organized crime," which placed a heavy burden on the family.
