The "idea" for a cross burning near Jena in 1995 is believed to trace back to Carsten Szczepanski ("Piatto"), a neo-Nazi from Brandenburg and an informant for the Brandenburg domestic intelligence service (Verfassungsschutz) from 1994 onward, who in 1991 had brought a Ku Klux Klan leader over from the USA and had a wooden cross set alight near Königs Wusterhausen. Components for pipe bombs were found in one of Szczepanski's apartments, prompting the Federal Prosecutor General to investigate on suspicion of forming a terrorist organization. Also acquainted with him was Thomas St., a member of a Chemnitz skinhead group and of Blood & Honour, who for years was also an informant for the Berlin State Criminal Police Office (LKA). He had procured one kilogram of TNT for the Jena trio. In 1976/77 he and Zschäpe were a couple for a time.

Half a year after the trio's downfall in 2011, investigators received a tip that in 1998 a helper of Zschäpe's had buried her personal documents at the barn. Among the items discovered there were Zschäpe's school report cards.
