From spring 1997, the former "Heilsberg" restaurant became a nationwide meeting point for neo-Nazis and a regular gathering place for members of the Thüringer Heimatschutz. The Thüringer Heimatschutz is a neo-Nazi network operating across state lines, which maintained close contact with the Blood & Honour structures. Activities attributed to the Thüringer Heimatschutz include both public actions and the mailing of numerous fake bombs as well as the planting of explosive devices. During a search of the restaurant in 1997, the largest weapons cache found in Thuringia up to that point was discovered there.

Uwe Böhnhardt, Uwe Mundlos and Beate Zschäpe had also joined the Thüringer Heimatschutz as the "Sektion Jena." After their flight from Jena and the start of their life underground, a concert was still held at the restaurant, at which 700 DM was collected for the three of them.
