In 1998, the NSU's first known robbery took place. Mundlos
and Böhnhardt robbed a Chemnitz supermarket and fled with loot amounting to 30,000 DM. While fleeing, they deliberately shot at the chest and head of a young man who had given chase. The bullets narrowly missed him.
